What is a Blog? Why should you read them?

What is a blog? and Why should you read them? Those are the main questions I want to address in this blog post.

How often do you read blogs? Do you even realize sometimes when you are reading a story or article that it’s actually a blog?

Often times, when you click on a story link from a friend’s FaceBook post it takes you to an article to read. That article is usually someone’s blog post.

So let’s dig a little deeper into what a blog really is and why we read them.

Let’s start with the main question.

What Is A Blog

According to the Oxford Dictionary, a Blog is a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.

Here is another great explanation of what is a blog:

A blog (shortening of “weblog”) is an online journal or informational website displaying information in the reverse chronological order, with the latest posts appearing first. It is a platform where a writer or even a group of writers share their views on an individual subject.

Therefore, blogs can be written and put out on the web by individuals (like myself) or groups of people (such as organizations) and also companies (to explain their services and products).

Why Do People Blog?

As I just stated, companies have blogs to explain their services and products. The blog gives details about their company and helps with advertising.

Organizations use blogs much in the same way. Especially non-profit organizations use their blogs as a way to connect and share their efforts to support their cause.

Individuals usually blog as a way to connect with other like-minded people. Some individuals blog as a way to earn income. They have affiliates of which they display ads for on their blogs. When readers click on the ads and make a purchase the blogger then earns a commission, at no extra cost to the reader/buyer.

Why Should You Read Blogs?

Now that we’ve discussed basically what a blog is, then you may wonder why should you read them? That’s a good question!

If you aren’t looking to buy something, then why read a blog? There are several good reasons to read blogs actually. So let’s look at a few reasons.

1. Entertainment-

Reading blogs can be very entertaining. You can find blogs about anything from comedy to pets and onto fashion. When you search on Pinterest for something the results take you to blogs! Yep, those pictures you click on take you to a link that is someone’s blog post!

2. DIY- Crafts/Recipes

Again, when you go to Pinterest looking for your next recipe or craft, you will land on someone’s blog. Someone put in hard work designing that blog post to give you the instructions on how to make that great DIY craft or homecooked meal!

3. A Peek Into Other People’s Lives

A lifestyle, fashion, or travel blog can give you a peek into someone else’s life! Much like a reality TV show. You can gain other people’s opinions about certain topics. See how they handle situations on parenting, stress, anxiety, and relationships. Travel blogs are a great source to help you discover things about somewhere you may be planning on visiting.

4. Information

Blogs are an abundant source of information! On just about every topic you can imagine! Like some, I’ve mentioned above such as DIY projects, cooking, travel, parenting, and health just to name a few. If you can think of it to search for it on Google or Pinterest, then you can find a blog post about it.

5. Research

You can use blogs for research. Blogs contain facts and information. They also contain links and resources to back up their facts. Bloggers put a lot of time and effort into publishing their posts. They work hard at creating quality content for their audiences.

You can also research products that you are looking to buy. The bloggers that blog to make money do not advertise products that they do not use or trust themselves. Many bloggers do posts that are reviews of products they have tested or used.

In Conclusion

You should read blogs because they not only provide entertainment, but they are great sources of valuable information.

Reading blogs also helps you connect with like-minded people, as well as helping the blogger increase their traffic to their website. You never know what kind of great information you will find in a blog! Then you can share it with your friends!

Again, What is a Blog?

A blog is an online log of information or an individual’s personal opinion/knowledge of a topic. It can be facts, opinions, or experiences.

It is continually updated by the author/owner of the blog. Usually in reverse chronological order. Showing the latest posts first.

You can follow a blog to always see new posts from that blogger. You can also follow each blogger on their social media accounts. And you can subscribe to the blog’s email lists to get notifications and offers from the blog. There are many great ways to connect with each blogger!

  1. As per Cisco 82% of internet traffic will be video by 2022. Blogs are great, good source of information, but we need to focus on making videos too. What do you say?
