Living alone during the isolation and social-distancing of COVID-19 crisis has been difficult, to say the least!
The national, and even worldwide crisis this pandemic has created has been horrifying for most people in many different ways and on different levels for each person.
Each new day since early March 2020 we all have constantly been adjusting and coping with what has become our new way of life, our “new norm”, at least for now.
And now we are starting to face the question of “Opening up America Again”. Yes! Emphatically Yes! We all want our economy and our lifestyles as we knew it to be back up and running!! Of course we do!! But what new obstacles, crisis and health concerns will we face going forward?
Will our lives ever be back to how we knew it before the COVID-19 outbreak of 2020? Are we now facing living in an altered “new norm” forever? Let’s talk about some of these things in this post.

Living Alone During COVID-19
Honestly, in the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak hitting the news, my daily routine didn’t change much. I live alone, and I don’t get out and about on a daily basis. Usually, I make a once-a-month grocery shopping trip, then short quick trips at the stores on the way to or from doctor appointments.
As for social outings, I go to church once a week and have lunch or dinner with family and friends a couple of times a month.
As a retired/disabled nurse with many health issues, I require more rest now than ever before and have become comfortable being at home with my 3 dogs.
But by February of 2020 as I started hearing of travel bans from China, and the news reports were all filled with headlines of this novel virus that was spreading I became concerned.
Social Distancing and Self Isolation
Suddenly before I even had time to fully process what was happening there was NO toilet paper on the shelves in any stores. People were “panic buying” and stocking up on supplies to stay isolated in their homes.
“Social distancing”, “Self-Isolation”, and “Self-Quarantined” had instantly become the normal terminology used constantly in news alerts and daily, or almost hourly news updates.
Students did not return to school after their Spring break. Non-Essential businesses were ordered by the government to close.
Everyone quickly became unsure of our economic future. As well as being fearful for our health. Scared to leave our homes even to go to the grocery store for food and medicine.

Coping With Living Alone During COVID-19 Pandemic
Coping with living alone while suffering from depression and anxiety is difficult under normal circumstances. But living alone while also dealing with self-isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic has created many more challenges.
Self-isolation during this time has increased my depression and the anxiety that I normally deal with on a daily basis. The stress has worsened by the concern for my own and my family’s health.
Not being able to visit and spend time with family and friends really is very depressing for me. Below are just a few ways that have helped me to cope.
- Daily phone calls with my daughters
- text messages with my son (he is an essential worker and not much time for phone calls)
- facetime/video chats with my grandchildren
- daily time reading my Bible/talking with God
- messages and online chats with close friends
- prayer group chats/messages with friends
- social media groups
- daily playing/walking with my dogs
- Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime
Starting to Reopen the Economy
As we are now starting to reopen the economy in phases I readily admit I am nervous and a bit over-anxious about what is ahead for our society’s health.
Of course, I am ready for our nation to begin moving forward and regain our normal lives and lucrative economy.
However, I am not sure that retail stores were the correct places to start within the first phase. People do not shop retail, especially clothes without “touching” and handling the merchandise. Then place some or most of what they have touched back on the shelves. Those garments or items are now contaminated for the next person to touch.
Honestly, in my personal opinion for the first phase, I would think hair salons, nail salons, even tattoo and piercing shops should have been first. These types of businesses can and most often do operate by appointments.
Also, these types of businesses clean equipment and the area after each client. The environment could be much more controlled for sanitary and health reasons.
Again, this is just my opinion. What are your thoughts on this subject?
How Long Will Social Distancing Continue
As the economy reopens in phases, how long will social distancing actually continue? Will social distancing always remain with us now as our “new norm”? Should it become our way of life even after COVID-19 is controlled?
Perhaps social distancing should become a way of life when out in public. I’m not saying to never hug or shake the hand of friends, family, or people that you know.
However, when out in the general public and in crowds it doesn’t seem like such a bad idea to put a little distance between yourself and the next person.
I don’t think of myself as a true “germaphobe”, but during all this self-isolation and time alone, I’ve had a lot of time to think. Social distancing could be good for more than just COVID-19. A little distancing out in public could also possibly help to not spread the flu each year.
Enduring COVID-19 Pandemic
We all have been enduring the COVID-19 pandemic. Each of us has endured hardships due to the crisis caused by this pandemic. Everyone across our nation and the world has been affected. Many have been affected worse than others.
I continually pray for all of those that are, (or have been) infected with the coronavirus. I also pray for all the families that have lost loved ones to this virus.
Fortunately, I am very blessed to say that my family and close friends have all stayed well and healthy during this pandemic, so far.
Yet as with many others my family has lost hours from work. My grandchildren are out of school. Life is not normal and it’s a hardship to pay bills right now.
Just know you are not alone. Everyone keeps saying that “together we will get through this”. And that is true. Everyone is enduring hardships, but we will get through it.
My Life Alone During This Pandemic
As I said earlier, in the beginning of this crisis, my daily life didn’t change much.
However as each day passed, my life did start to change. Mostly it was my mental and emotional state that started changing. I quickly became obsessed with the news each day.
I had apps on my phone, and alerts on my computer to notify me of any breaking news. I was constantly watching live footage on Facebook from local news stations and The White House.
Before long I realized how crazy this was making me feel. My anxiety had reached all-time high levels. My depression had reached new lows.
I had to stop watching so much news!! So I forced myself to limit it to one website of a local (for my area in Texas) news station. I deleted all but one news alert app.
Each morning, I go to KWTX- Central Texas COVID-19 interactive website that shows updated numbers of positive cases and deaths for counties surrounding me.
After that each morning I spend time talking to God. Praying and thanking Him for all the blessings that I do have. I try to start each day with gratitude instead of focusing on the sad or things going wrong.
We must try to keep positive attitudes while enduring this crisis, especially those of us living alone during isolation and social distancing.
What’s next? I think that is the question that has been on all of our minds from the beginning.
Of course each step of the way the answer to that question has been ever changing.
Now as we are at the beginning phases of reopening our nation and our economy we are all watching and waiting once again to see what happens next.
We all hope it goes well and that we don’t see an increase in positive cases of the virus. We all want positive outcomes.
Even though I’m a bit nervous about reopening the economy, I know by all reasonable explanations, this is the next step that must be taken.
As we all prepare to continue moving forward with each step and each day, stay positive!
Take every precaution possible. Always, always, at all times practice social distancing, wear a mask, and wash your hands. A hundred times over, wash your hands!!
There was a time when AIDS was a “novel” disease. Nobody knew anything about AIDS and it came about at a time when I was working in health care and we didn’t even use gloves back then.
Our main defense was “universal precautions” which at that time in age basically meant good hand washing technique.
This also all came about at a time in my life when I was a young, single, and somewhat promiscuous woman. I was also often getting blood transfusions due to my anemia.
Needless to say, I was at high risk of possibly contracting AIDS. Yet I worked directly in contact with AIDS patients and did not become infected.
I tell you all of that just to say that you can protect yourself from infection, diseases, and viruses by using precautions and a lot of common sense. Keep yourself protected.
If we each and all do our own part to take care of ourselves, we can beat this thing and keep it controlled!!!
